HKS has always been very good at exhaust technology and manufacturing quality.

One of the challenges of designing a reall good exhaust system is to produce as small back-pressure with high flow volumes as possible whilst retaining a comfortable sound level.

HKS had approached this challenge in the usual innovate way by using straight-through mufflers, inner slits in the tail pipes, and an ingenious automatic bypass valve system that changes the exhaust flow path according to the engine speed.

The valves operates in 3 stages to provide a quiet output (similar to the standard system) at low engine speed, a comfortable output at medium speed, and an aggressive output at high speeds. The system comes with 4 valves, motors and an electronic control unit to perform these functions.

The system has a distinctive triple pipe outlet per side, which looks great!

The GT1000 intercooler kit has the following features:

• Vertical flow layout to maintain cylinder airflow balance

Ever at the forefront of development on GT-R35, HKS has developed two new intercooler packages for Nissan’s supercar.

HKS Ductless Intercooler Kit

The standard Nissan intercooler system is adequate for the normal boost pressure but becomes saturated when the pressure is increased to 1.2 bar and beyond. At this level the standard incooler cannot control or maintain the intake temperatures, meaning that the performance and engine reliability becomes affected.

The saturation problem is caused by the small size of the intercooler cores which have insufficient surface area to dissipate the heat energy. This is solved by the application of the new HKS Ductless intercooler kit which is ideal for light tuning up to 800hp!

The Ductless intercooler cores are substantially larger than standard but are still alomost 2kg lighter! A unique inner fin design ensures that internal pressure losses are minimized. This, together will free flowing cast end tanks ensure good air flow efficiency.

High speed dyno and race track testing has proven the engine water cooling temperature to remain unchanged by the introduction of this kit.

Designated the “HKS VR41 GT1000″ engine, this is the latest development from HKS.

Designed to suit those who require in excess of 800hp, the VR41 engine benefits for extensive/exhaustive testing to produce impressive performance and reliability.

Designed with a longer stroke to improve low speed torque and to be better suited with large turbochargers than the original capacity, and a “square” bore/stroke ratio so as not to reduce peak RPM, the VR41 engine has been proven to perform reliably in excess of 1000hp.

The HKS VR41 engine kit comprizes the following components and features:

• Aluminium forged billet racing pistons, incorproating a special truss structure to enhance strength, and an ultra-short skirt for friction and weight reduction (8-g lighter than Step 1 and 2 HKS pistons!). The standard bore size is retained in order to preserve the integrity of the culinder block.
• Forged steel H Section connecting rods fetauring fully floating small end bushes and high tensile bolts.
• Forged steel billet crankshaft, having a 95mm stroke and knife-edged counter weights for reduced weight and frictional losses.

HKS really has a handle on tuning the VR38DETT engine in the Nissan R35 GT-R and is now knocking on a genuine 1000 bhp power output!

As part of this process the technicians at HKS in Japan have uncovered the major restrictions on the VR38DETT engine and are rapidly developing top quality components to improve matters. And their latest release is a great case in point – a new high performance plenum (called the High-Flow Surge Kit) which is designed to equalise the intake air volume across all six cylinders of the VR38DETT motor, while boosting throttle response and the air flow demands of a 1000 bhp engine.

Here are the key facts about the HKS High Flow Surge Kit for the Nissan R35 GT-R:-

• Cast plenum that’s seperate from the VR38DETT’s intake manifold
• Larger diameter ports and different port shape to suit high power engines
• Plenum volume optimised for engine reponse rather than top end bhp to ensure a good spread of power
• Funnel design in end tanks of the ports to optimise air flow from the sides of the plenum to increase air volume
• Allows reuse of stock air temperature sensor, adaptors, breather pipe, connecting pipe

Fitment of the High-Flow Surge tank is typically well thought our by HKS – it’s a straight bolt on job without the need for cutting, crimping or any other intrusive procedures that might detract from reliability on what’s not exactly a cheap car…

And that’s why HKS has also developed a Twin Injector Pro Kit for to suit the new plenum. This includes a specially designed fuel rail and other components to suit the easy installation of additional injectors for high powrr VR38DETT engines. 

HKS doesn’t include injectors in this kit, but it’s been designed to accommodate individual preference for secondary injector sizes. HKS includes adaptors to suit the stock R35 GT-R injectors within the kit and these can be replaced to suit the chosen injector preference.
